Geoff Yates - Obituary
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Geoff Yates following a long battle with cancer. Geoff joined Fenton Chess Club, or the Angel Chess Club as it was known at the time, in 2001, having previously played for Smallthorne from 1990 until it closed down in 1998. Geoff's deteriorating health meant that he hadn't been able to visit the club as much as he would have liked over the past couple of years. However, his ready wit and humour will be greatly missed by all of us. From a personal point of view I remember meeting Geoff on the first night that I joined Fenton in 2005 when we were based at the New Penny in Goldenhill Road. From that very first night he was taking the mickey out of the only cockney in the club and that never changed. We have all been the butt of Geoff's humour over the years and it will be difficult to imagine the club without him. Our condolences go to his wife, Norma, and all of his family. As soon as I have any details regarding his funeral I will let you all know.
