A great win for Fenton 'A' last night in their first ever match in Division 1 in the Club's history. Whatever else happens this season we can now say that we have been top of Division 1, even if only for a short period of time. A 3-2 win against Cheddleton 'A', in an entertaining match that was littered with errors, put us top of the heap. Kas was the first to finish on board 3, coming off second best against Jacob Boswell, fresh from his success in the Crewe Congress Open. However, Glyn quickly levelled the match with a win on board 5, before Ray blundered his game away on board 4 in a position that was at least level. Petru was a pawn down in an endgame on board 2, but with his King in a very strong position in the middle of the board. A blunder by his opponent allowed him to fork Rook and King with a Knight and it was very soon game over. That levelled the match at 2-2 and all eyes were on new Fenton player Gerald Acey. He was a pawn down but the game looked drawn when his opponent inexplicably allowed his Knight to be pinned in the middle of the board. Moving it would have led to a back rank mate which, a couple of moves later, it actually did. Without the blunders on boards 1,2 and 4 it could have been a very different outcome, but you have to ride your luck when it comes your way so nobody is complaining. Our next match in Division 1 will provide a very stern test when we travel to the current Champions, Holmes Chapel, on the 29th November.
